What if I Want Dental Sedation, But I’m Pregnant? Is It Safe?
January 13, 2025

Becoming pregnant doesn’t magically eliminate dental anxiety, so what do you do if you need oral care while you’re expecting? Are sedation and anesthetic options safe for you and your child?
These are great questions to ask, but the answer can be a bit complicated, or even confusing! Fortunately, the goal of this post is to simplify the facts. Keep reading so you can have an informed conversation with your dentist.
Is Dental Sedation Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes, but your dentist will likely recommend waiting until your second trimester or until after your baby is born to receive dental sedation during a treatment. Studies have found that methods like oral conscious sedation (which simply means it’s taken as a pill) can negatively affect the fetus or cause premature labor during the first and second trimesters. This is why you might find both “yes” and “no” answers on the internet!
Can I Receive an Anesthetic?
Yes – and if an anesthetic is enough to help you feel reassured, then this may be the route to take. Anesthetics have a good track record for mother and child safety when administered during pregnancy. However, it should be noted that the primary purpose of an anesthetic is to dull pain and numb your mouth. They generally don’t have the same calming effect as stronger sedation methods.
The Importance of Dental Care during Pregnancy
While experts typically recommend waiting until after your child is born to receive any involved dental treatments, if you develop a case of cavities or gum disease, waiting could put your teeth at serious risk. Plus, there’s some evidence that indicates cavity-causing bacteria can be passed down to the unborn fetus, increasing their chances of cavities later in life.
Navigating your oral health while pregnant can be tricky. Fortunately, you’re not alone. Your dentist will be able to take in all this information and consider the specifics of your situation. They’ll work with you to find the solution that works best for you and your child so you can have a positive and safe dental experience!
