Am I A Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Is the thought of an upcoming dental appointment leaving you feeling anxious or scared? Have you canceled appointments with your dentist in the past due to feelings of fear? If this sounds familiar, you may be an excellent candidate for sedation dentistry. This treatment has helped tens of thousands of patients just like you relax comfortably during their dental appointments (yes, even routine cleanings and exams) but to try it, you need to be a good candidate. Here’s how to tell if it will work for you!

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of sedation methods like nitrous oxide or an oral sedative to help you relax and feel more comfortable during your dental treatment. It can be used for any type of procedure, from the most routine care to the most advanced.

Who Shouldn’t Be Sedated?

Sedation dentistry should be safe for most patients, however there are a few conditions that could make it extremely dangerous, including:

  • Pregnancy: Pregnant patients should not use nitrous oxide during their first trimester and oral sedation should not be used at all.
  • Age:  Sedation is safe for patients of all ages; however, it should only be used on children if there is truly a need for it. Adults of an extremely advanced age should avoid it as well.
  • Allergies: If you have any known allergies to the medications used for sedation dentistry, you should not use it.
  • Respiratory illness: Respiratory problems like illness or infection can make it difficult to breathe clearly through your nose, so if you are suffering from this condition, you may not be able to experience the effects of nitrous oxide. Furthermore, oral sedation can slow your breathing, so this method is not recommended if you have respiratory issues, either.
  • Medications: Unfortunately, certain medications, including over the counter vitamins and supplements, as well as prescription drugs cannot be mixed with sedation. Thus, be sure to notify your dentist if you are taking any type of medicine ahead of your appointment.

Remember, while sedation dentistry is safe and effect for nearly all patients, it is important to fully disclose your medical history to your dentist before trying it to avoid any potentially dangerous side effects. Should you have any questions or concerns about sedation dentistry, speak to your dentist prior to treatment.
